SONIC FABRIC: ALYCE SANTORO

Alyce Santoro gives the phrase “wearable art” new meaning–how about wearable music? Sonic Fabric–created by Alyce––is a textile made from audio cassette tape. For a fascinating story of origin, involving sailing and Tibetan flags, click here. Once woven, the tape can still be “played.”

In 2003 I was commissioned to make a dress for Jon Fishman, percussionist for the band
Phish, which he wore and played on stage during a concert in Las Vegas.

I had the chance to visit Alyce in West Texas, on the top of a mountain, near Marfa. There, she works in her solar-powered studio, a retrofitted camper. She’s in the process of fundraising now–for more information, click here.

Summer Camp Dreams

I know most of us are too *adult* for summer camp, but every year, I still dream about it. Over the last decade, various programs have sprung up–programs that seem to recognize that adults want to continue to learn new skills, meet new people, and get a little summer camp feelin’ back in their lives. Some of these programs are new, while others have been around for decades. If you want to learn to make wood bowls, lithographs, furniture, viking boats, or documentary films, here’s a sampling of classes that might speak to those designers harboring additional art/craft fantasies:

DesignSponge blogger, Grace Bonney brought our attention to Marimekko’s Spring 09 designs. If you are fighting the February blues, these swatches might brighten your day. I file this post away under inspiration but also “dream,” because we often dream of all the things we might sew with Marimekko fabric.

DREAM: TINY

Most of us are taught to “dream big,” but if you are dreaming “tiny,” you will love this blog: the tiny house blog, with special categories for floating houses and pre-fabs. I especially like this hand-crank washing machine, or at least the idea of it. Having just run two loads through a washing machine, I think efficiency comes in many forms.

DREAM: PART ONE, Building a Boat

Getting a head start on dreams mistakenly deferred (or left the defeatist world of “New Year’s Resolutions”), we are focusing this month on how to do design-related things you have always dreamed of doing, but maybe didn’t know just how to go about it–how to build a boat, carve wooden bowls, restore furniture, run a letterpress…..

If you have wondered how old viking ships are made or how to build your own canoe, you might want to take a week off this summer to attend the Wooden Boat School in Brooklin, Maine. There, you can learn wood-and-canvas-canoe construction as well as how to build a kayak. They are about to announce the summer 2009 classes this month!
