Inspiration: Greek Coffee

We interrupt this design blog for coffee, the best coffee you can imagine: a Greek frappé. Ice cold and foamy, this drink takes a few minutes to make. I recommend using something you would normally consider disgusting: Nescaffé What You Need:

Shaker or jar with a tight-fitting lid or drink mixer
1 cup cold water
Instant coffee
Sugar (optional)
Milk (optional)
Ice [...]

INSPIRATION: LAURIE RUBIN

Recently, reader Laurie Rubin sent some gorgeous images of our favorite things: books. We love her driftwood images, too. You can find more work at www. laurierubingallery.com.

Laurie’s Bio: Laurie has experience shooting both nationally and abroad and has taught many workshops, inspiring other photographers. She also works as a film director, applying that same discerning, stylish aesthetic [...]

DAYTRIP: WALLPAPER EXCAVATION

I recently found several beautiful videos by Lisa Durfee. One of my favorites is “Wallpaper excavation.” Watch closely. All fans of wallpaper will have a special appreciation for the peeling part of the video. Mind the brief Dire Straits interlude.
Wallpaper excavation
“Paula @433 Warren Street” is also beautiful.

DESIGN AND FOOD

Is it just me, or do designers have good taste in food? Design Sponge’s Grace Bonney has capitalized on this predilection with her blog feature “In the kitchen with…”  Here’s the latest with Yaling Hou: fried cheese. Yum.

LIT: NEW SCANDINAVIAN ROOMS

Though we can’t exactly “read” the web-site, we know we like it. Here are some pictures from the magazine, NYTTROM [subscription information can be found on the web-site]:

HERO: KARIM RASHID

It’s the little things–like radiators. Karim Rashid can get excited and incensed about poor radiator design, and we’re grateful. It doesn’t hurt to push your agenda while wearing a uniform of all white or pink clothing for 10+ years. The New York Times ran a great interview on this design star on February 19. You [...]

INSPIRATION: Peter Koch

Though the Kindle II arrived to great fanfare this month, we’re still feeling romantic about books as objects–the smell, the size, and the feel of turning pages. Peter Koch Printers shares our enthusiasm for the book–and more. He uses old presses in combination with computers, and teaches both the history of typography and how to use an [...]

MATTER: MARIMEKKO

DesignSponge blogger, Grace Bonney brought our attention to Marimekko’s Spring 09 designs. If you are fighting the February blues, these swatches might brighten your day. I file this post away under inspiration but also “dream,” because we often dream of all the things we might sew with Marimekko fabric.

LIT: DOMINO FOLDS

We would be remiss not to mention that Domino Magazine will be closing its doors. The last issue features Zooey Deschanel’s abode. Her fabulously bright tights are a great part of the photos (they are look from london). We are still enjoying the Domino blog, and we will wait to hear what’s next from Deborah Needleman and crew (And this feels [...]

MATTER: BRICOLAGE

Jean Pelle has designed these beautiful objects that make us think of assemblage and bricolage, and Brancusi’s sculptures at MOMA. You can purchase some of her unique creations, here. [Thank you, DesignSponge]
