First created by Robert Smithson in 1970, the work of land art was donated by Smithson to the dia art Foundation. The water level was low when Smithson built the jetty. Since then, the work has been visible on and off (Some reports say it was submerged for three whole decades). 

Erin Hogan wrote a great book about her 3,000 mile journey west of Chicago to visit significant works of land art. Her book is titles Spiral Jetta.
